We all have heard about the one and only Yves Saint Laurent and GBTS is sure there’s at least one thing each fashion lover craves from his luxury fashion house. There’s also no doubt that all of us, fashion and cinema geeks, know about a new film “Saint Laurent” staring incredibly talented and handsome Gaspard Ulliel as an iconic couturier. So, that’s what we are talking about today on the blog. THE FILM.
We watched it last week when it came out in Ukraine and it would not be enough to just say that it was good. The film is great, it made a huge impression on us.
First of all, the cast. Our love to Ulliel began years ago and having an opportunity to see him in such a role was overwhelming. To our mind, he did amazing work and made this film feel even more of that glorious epoch of Laurent. Jérémie Renier, Louis Garrel, Léa Seydoux, Amira Casar, Aymeline Valade, Helmut Berger – every actor and actress made it as good as it could possibly be.
Decorations and costumes were as important as actors since it’s all about not only showing the audience life and work of the designer, trends and flow of that particular period of time, that made a huge impact on fashion, but also about actually making us feel all of that. It made us see everything through the prism of our own perception and letting us be insiders. Unbelievable.
If you watched the film, you know there’s not a lot of action. If you’re into fashion history and fashion itself, you know that this is exactly how it should be. It’s a biography. There were some people who left the room before the end of the film. We don’t understand that. It’s a continuous story telling of the outstanding person who will always take an important place in history of fashion, who introduced the tuxedo suit for women, who lived his life truly and made this world better because of his talent. The atmosphere of the film made that feeling of admiration even stronger, and that only means Bertrand Bonello (director) and everybody who worked on “Saint Laurent” created a real masterpiece.
